Freddy Wittop learned costume design at the age of 13 at the Brussels Opera. After working for several Belgian theatres, he came to Paris in 1930 where he drew for the Folies Bergère from 1931 to 1936, then for various theatres in London and New York. In 1940 he settled in New York. For 8 years he was a professional dancer, then from 1958 he resumed his design work exclusively. He became one of the leading designers on Broadway, Holiday On Ice and at least 80 musicals. It is said he produced approximately 50,000 drawings.
